London Design Festival

The London Design Festival is an annual event, held to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world and as the gateway to the international creative community.

First staged in 2003, the Festival programme is made up of over 400 events and exhibitions staged by hundreds of Partner organisations across the design spectrum and from around the world.

A centerpiece of the Festival is our commissions, theLandmark Projects, created with the help of our generous supporters. For the Landmark Projects we commission some of the world's greatest architects and designers to create pieces of work in some of London's best-loved public spaces. Then there are the Partner events; if anything is evidence of this city's vitality, it's the sheer scope and quality of the Festival events programmed by our Partners. From established businesses to emerging practices, from entrepreneurs to educators, from manufacturers to retailers, our Partners represent the heart of London's design culture.

The Festival is both a cultural and a commercial event. The programme ranges from major international exhibitions to trade events, installations to talks and seminars, from product launches to receptions, private views and parties. The majority of events are free of charge - enabling visitors to participate, listen, learn, commission and make purchases. The Festival is funded through a combination of public and private sources. The Mayor ofLondon's office provides grant funding for the Festival; Arts Council England have been long term supporters of the Festival. Private funding (approx 60%) is raised through sponsorship of Festival projects alongside a small range of London Design Festival products and services delivered throughout the year. Festival audiences are significant, with an estimated direct audience of over 375,000 people from over 75 countries, with a wider audience of over 1m people coming into contact with the major public commissions in 2015. The Festival also had a programme of 417 projects and events staged by 301 Partner organisations.

"The London Design Festival is the most vivid possible proof that London is the hub of the creative industries in the world. The London Design Festival is an annual event, held to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world and as the gateway to the International creative community." - Boris Johnson, former Mayor of London.

Margiela. The Hermès Years

  • MOMU - FASHION MUSEUM ANTWERP NATIONALESTRAAT 28 2000 ANTWERP BELGIUM (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

MoMu is displaying Belgian stylist Martin Margiela's Hermès collections from 1997 to 2003 for the first time. As well as this, the tribute exhibition also explores the relationship during these years between these collections and his own label, Maison Martin Margiela. Groundbreaking deconstruction and timeless luxury -the two worlds of designer Martin Margiela- are the starting point of the exhibition 'Margiela. The Hermès Years'.

When the Parisian house Hermès appointed Martin Margiela as its artistic director for the women's ready-to-wear collections in October 1997, the founder of Maison Martin Margiela had already been known for almost a decade as one of the most in uential avant-garde designers. His predilection for the deconstruction, recycling and recovery of materials was unheard of in the fashion world of that era. His conceptual approach to the presentation, sales and communication of his collections has changed the way we think about fashion and its underlying mechanisms, as well as our opinions on craftsmanship, commerce, authorship and innovation.

When Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, approached Margiela for the label's ready-to-wear for women at the end of the 1990s, it was a daring choice to say the least, and not in line with the prevailing developments on the fashion scene, which preferred celebrity designers to breathe new life into traditional French fashion houses. The fact that Hermès, the crown jewel of Parisian luxury, chose Margiela -an iconoclast who longed to remain anonymous and up to then had never given a single interview- raised quite a few eyebrows. The fashion press greedily speculated whether Margiela would apply his deconstruction idiom to the iconic Hermès legacy.

From 1997 to 2003, Margiela instilled his exhaustive and consistent vision of modern-day luxury into twelve consecutive Hermès collections. His sleek designs for the Hermès woman were all about comfort, timelessness and tactility, values that he shared with the house and that de ned his vision of the Hermès woman associated with an understated style. The image he presented for Hermès surprised the press because of its unexpected direction. His sober and monochrome colour palette diverged from the typical brightly-coloured Hermès prints. Assisted by the outstanding craftsmanship of the Hermès studios, Margiela was able to distil his design and tailoring into sheer perfection, supported by extensive material research that not only enhanced the comfort of the wearer, but also introduced numerous innovations.

Margiela's work for Hermès continues to influence the work of many contemporary designers. During Paris Fashion Week for autumn-winter 2016-2017, the international press described Martin Margiela -who retreated from the fashion world more than eight years ago- as the 'true protagonist' of fashion week. High time to showcase some of his masterpieces with 'Margiela. The Hermès Years' at MoMu.

Art Paris Art Fair 2017

  • GRAND PALAIS AVENUE WINSTON CHURCHILL 75008 PARIS FRANCE (map)

Held from 30th March to 2nd April 2017, Art Paris Art Fair is a springtime art fair focusing on discovery. Art Paris Art Fair brings together 140 galleries from some 20 countries at the Grand Palais to explore European art from the post war period to the present day as well as international emerging art scenes.

Exploration, commitment and innovation

Since 2012, the fair has built a reputation for its exploration of art scenes from around the world. After Asia, Art Paris Art Fair continues in its commitment to bring to light emerging art scenes. In 2017 Africa is guest of honour with a project curated by independent cultural consultant and exhibition curator Marie-Ann Yemsi. The objective is to work with galleries and artists from both the African continent and the diaspora to highlight the richness and diversity of contemporary African creativity. A symposium, a programme of video projections and several special projects will broaden this exploration and offer an in-depth vision of the creative fertility and energy of the African continent.

Solo Show

Introduced in 2015, the “Solo Show” section includes some 20 galleries disseminated throughout the fair. This section designed to encourage the discovery or rediscovery of the work of a particular modern, contemporary or emerging artist. Special sponsored rates apply to “Solo Show” and a significant media campaign is designed to promote it. This includes the renewed partnership between Art Paris Art Fair and Air France buses. In this joint project, five artists from the 2017 “Solo Show” section are selected and their work displayed on the buses for a month.

Promises

Art Paris Art Fair supports young galleries and emerging talents. The “Promises” section is dedicated to young galeries that are under six years old. It is located in the centre of the Grand Palais and is made up of 12 galleries that may present up to three artists maximum. The fair covers part of their costs.

The walls: showcasing historic and contemporary work

At Art Paris Art Fair, the North and South walls of the Grand Palais are made available for rare historic works or specific contemporary creations.

Monumental digital art on the façade of the Grand Palais

In cooperation with a number of participating galleries, Art Paris Art Fair offers a unique programme of spectacular projections of digital art on the façade of the Grand Palais every evening for the duration of the fair. In partnership with the company Vidélio, this digital mapping project brings to life and transforms the façade of this majestic historical monument.

Paris capital of the arts

The City of Lights is experiencing an exceptional artistic and architectural regeneration with the opening in 2017 of several new institutions and foundations. The “Springtime in Paris” VIP programme offers collectors and art professionals access to the best of what is on in Paris, this year with a special focus on Africa.

Making contemporary art accessible to all

Art Paris Art Fair is dedicated to making contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience, offering some 80 guided tours of the fair as well as a number of specific tools, in particular its elaborate yet eminently practical website. It presents a virtual visit of the fair and filters that allow visitors to search for works by artist, price, geographical provenance and technique. Also available on location are flyers for each gallery that provide visitors with information on the works on offer and a way to navigate the fair.

Tom Cardwell - Bad Patch

  • WIMBLEDON SPACE MERTON HALL ROAD LONDON SW19 3QA UNITED KINGDOM (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This series of new paintings by Tom Cardwell take as their subject the customised ‘battle jackets’ worn by heavy metal fans. These jackets represent a significant tradition of DIY making practice and act as a display of identity and subcultural allegiance for the fan. Although contemporary in nature, the band logos and artworks hark back to past eras in Western cultural history. Cardwell exploits these connections to re-present the jackets as crossing points for diverse layers of narrative, with a nod to the concerns of Dutch still life painting.

The exhibition features two related series of works. A series of small watercolour paintings transcribe a selection of jackets made by fans, bringing the scrutiny of the medium to bear on the collections of patches, studs and other embellishments. These become a sort of contemporary ‘kunstkammer’ painting. The group of larger oil paintings connect and conflate the battle jackets with other related artefacts; a leather biker jacket, a military banner, a priest’s chasuble. These creative juxtapositions suggest connections between ostensibly disparate traditions that are reified in objects that only exist in the space of painting.

This exhibition forms the culmination of Cardwell’s practice-based PhD project and is presented with support from the CCW Graduate School and Wimbledon College of Arts.

A new trade show for British brands to expand into the United States.

London, UK 21 December: CMC (California Market Center) hosts a number of prominent, large industry trade shows during Market, attracting targeted resources for buyers to shop. In a recent survey to its LA Fashion Market database, 97% of the respondents showed a strong desire for a British trade show, and would attend. “Many US buyers want to trade in sterling post Brexit as the rates are more in their favour - a great benefit for businesses wanting to export to the US now. They want British brands with provenance and a strong brand story. This is why we have created Source British" says Olivett Asare, Event Director.

Source British is a new trade show taking place in Los Angeles, California at the LA Fashion Market from 13 – 14 March 2017. The show has many British brands confirmed, and is co-located with LA Fashion Market offering a springboard to British heritage and contemporary brands across categories like apparel, gifts, crafts, home, footwear and accessories to access the US market and meet 4,000 buyers and distributors from across the West Coast, Mid West and wider USA.

Research from entering the US retail market by Martin Harrison shows “US consumers are hungry for British style, though awareness of most British brands is still low”. Paul Alger, Director of International Business Development – UKFT confirms “The US is a major market for UK companies but many US buyers do not like to travel. It is, therefore, vitally important for UK brands to invest time and attention on the US market”.
